At the first foundation of Ramsey Abbey, King Edgar in response to a request by Archbishop Oswald, bestowed 5 hides of land at Burwell to pay for the necessary expenses of the first stages of the building. In his Charter he confirms their possession in perpetuity of this land.
King Edgar also gave the church of Godmanchester and 3 hides of land, with 1 hide of land at Stukely and two bells purchased for a price of £20. (Ref 9)
