• DANENTRE. This is probably identical with the
modern Daintree, the name of a farm in the Parish of Ramsey; and it is worthy of
remark that in excavating for the foundation of the present farm-house there,
the head of a figure was found, carved in stone, very much resembling that of
the Scandinavian idol in Cassell’s History of England.—Vo] I. p 445.
If this head is of Scandinavian workmanship, it would seem to argue an early
settlement on this spot. The head may still be seen above the front door
of the house.
